- Why can't I log in? My username and password
don't seem to work.
First remember that your username and password are case sensitive,
and check that 'Caps Lock' is not set. Check that you have your
browser set to accept 'cookies' (this is the default for most
browsers).
If you have a 'firewall' (eg: Norton Personal Firewall) it could be
preventing the setting of cookies and other such things. You can test
if this is the case by temporarily disabling the firewall and trying
to logon again. If this works, you can adjust your firewall settings
for a permanent solution. See the software provider's help file.
If you have forgotten your password, email us with your username and
we will send the password to the original email address you used to
sign up.
Free Trial/Test Drive problems
- I saw strange error messages when I tried to
create my Free Trial account.
When I try to log in, it says my account does not exist. What's the
problem?
Please check that the email you gave in the sign up form was a
valid one. Although the email is checked for basic syntax, if there is
something wrong with the email address it can prevent the account
being created.
Also if you try to create another account with the same username it
will be rejected.
Technical problems
- How do I add music to a web page?
You can easily add music to one or all of you pages. We suggest
you do so only sparingly, and bearing mind that many people will have
their sound turned down or off.
Here's how.
- Why doesn't the 'Create Web Site' button work
for me?
The multi-page instant Web Site Creator is a tool that is only
available to Site Builder BUSINESS subscribers. If you signed
up for the PERSONAL subscription, you can still build a web
site, but the pages will be created one by one. To ensure you know how
to get the consistent look and feel between the individually created
pages, please download and read the
tutorial.
- How do I create a domain name?
This service is available to Site Builder BUSINESS subscribers.
The form for requesting your domain name can be accessed after you
have logged in. It can take up to 7 days for the process to be
complete. More details in the 'Resources' section.
- I have a domain name but my site does not appear
when I type it the browser. What am I doing wrong?
Things to check:
- Did you save and publish before leaving your filestore last time?
If not, any changes
you made will not be visible. Solution: login to your
filestore and save/publish your
home page.
- Did you call your home page "index" as recommended? If you didn't, the
server will
not know what page to display as you home page. Solution:
open your home page in
the page editor and save it as 'index' . Don't forget to
'publish' it or it will be invisible to
the outside world.
- Did you wait enough time after requesting the domain for it to
'propagate' around the
Internet? It can take up to 7 days for the process to be
completed.
- How do I set up email addresses using my new
domain name?
Once the domain name has been requested and set up, log in to your
filestore and click on the 'My Details' button. There you will
find a form for setting up the email addresses for your new domain.
- Sometimes the Site Builder program seems to run
very slowly. Why is this?
If you are using the Free Trial version, you may experience delays
if there are a large number of users trying to use the Site Builder at
the same time. With the PERSONAL and BUSINESS subscriptions, you will
experience faster response from Site Builder.
Be aware that the internet itself varies dramatically in the level of
congestion during the day. The worst time is typically in the
afternoon when the kids get home from school and log on!
If you have a 'shared bandwidth', such as accessing the internet via
your Cable TV provider, the difference in speed can be very
significant as additional users log on the internet and download huge
files.
Summary: If you experience congestion on the internet, try to do your
internet work before midday.
- I'll be spending more time on the 'net. How do I
get a faster connection?
Depending on where you live you may not have all these options
available to you, but here are the main ones:
- ADSL. ("Asynchronous Digital Subscriber
Line")
aka 'broadband', and various proprietary names that Telecom service
providers give it. Compared with regular " 56k " modem that comes as
standard with most PCs you would experience 5 to 10 times the speed
(except when the internet is congested). The ADSl signal comes down
the same wires as your regular phone, so no new wires have to be
installed, but you can use it at the same time as making and receiving
regular phone calls (Also known as 'analog' or POTS - Plain Old
telephone Service').
You'll pay a fixed price, and it's an 'always on' technology in
principle. This means that once you are logged in, you can stay on for
ever without paying any more for your access. Some providers will bump
you off every couple of hours if there is no activity, so you have to
reconnect.
Try to get the 'box' , installation, and the ADSL service all from
your local phone service provider. It can be a painful experience
getting ADSL installed and working, and it's better if there are not
different parties involved blaming each other.
If you plan to leave your PC logged in to the internet all the time,
you should install a 'firewall'. ( eg Symantec's Personal Firewall ).
This stops hackers getting into your computer from the internet.
If your provider gives you the option, and your computer supports it,
get the 'USB' modem rather than one which uses an Ethernet connection,
unless you plan to have several computers sharing the connection via a
home network.
- Cable Modem
If you have cable TV passing your house, and the provider offers
internet access as well as TV channels, this can be a painless way to
get a fast connection. Less hassle than ADSL. As for ADSL, you
should install a 'firewall'.
- ISDN ("Integrated Services Digital Network")
Also known by local proprietary names. It offers 64k bps (which will
seem about twice as fast as your 56kbs modem, although technically it
is only 15% faster) and 128 kbps, which will seem 3 to 4 time faster
than your 56k modem. You will pay an for two local calls whenever you
are connected at 128k, as it combines two digital channels.
You'll find it much faster to 'dial up' (just a couple of seconds),
and the speed of connection less variable than your 56k modem
An ISDN line gives you the effect of two ordinary phone lines (with
their own numbers) and a digital connection for your computer.
Usually no technical hassle to install, and works right out of the
box. Opt for the USB modem, which will save you opening your computer
to install it.
Miscellaneous questions
- Sometimes the page does not fully load; the
navigation bar does not load; I get strange page layout...
We strongly recommend that you upgrade to a recent browser eg:
either Internet Explorer v 5.5 or later, or Netscape v 6.1 or later.
Both are free. Some earlier browsers have problems with handling
certain types of script as well as being less secure.
- Where can I see some examples of sites made with
these tools?
Visit the Gallery section for a selection of sites which have been
constructed using the Site Builder tools. And if you think yours looks
good enough to be included.
